St John‘s Cathedral Chapel

historic renovation

The challenge of this project was to fit a multitude of new programmatic requirements into the lower level of this historic Catholic cathedral, all with an eye on project budget and code requirements. The design approach was to make the chapel interior reflect traditional “crypt” chapels of early Christian churches, with elements borrowed from the main cathedral; while the rest of the lower level was completely renovated to accommodate a busy school cafeteria, multipurpose room, meeting rooms, and more. The end result is a blend of the prayerful and practical, and a flexible space to serve a growing community for the next century.
